This year's event is almost entirely on new trails (again) - same ocean though. And, like last
year the event has a net elevation drop of over 1,000 ft. The event will take place in the
Santa Monica Mountains. We expect this year's event to take about 4-8 hours -depending on
your ability level.
Ideally you will be in teams of two - although we are flexible to alternatives....
1) Please read the following carefully.
2) Please remember this is not a race - if asked, it is a training event – we keep time merely for informational purposes.

before the event.
f. For mountain biking
i. You must have a Bike
ii. You must have a helmet.

UPDATE #2 12/09/09
Remember – this is an Event, not a race!
The Event will take place rain or shine.
Directions to START
Be at the START at 7: 06 AM
The Start is located 3.3 miles west of Kanan Rd on Encinal Canyon. Rd.
There is a dirt parking lot on the North Side of Encinal Canyon Rd. opposite the women’s correctional camp.
Take Kanan Rd to Mulholland Hwy which is about 6 miles north of PCH and about 6 miles South of the
101FWY. Stay on Mulhollland for about a mile ad then take Encinal, which will be the left fork of the road.
Continue on Encinal for another 2.3 miles.
Pre- Start procedures:
OPTION A: Bring two cars and leave one near the finish area and bring ALL your gear up to the Start. This
way you can leave when you want after you finish. The place to drop the car is in the parking lot at the strip
mall on PCH and Dume Dr.
OPTION B: Go directly to start. If you have two cars, we will shuttle on car down to the finish area before we
start. If you plan to do this, then have one team member set stuff up, while the other shuttles the car to the
finish (about 10 miles away). Do not leave any gear in the car being shuttled to the finish.
OPTION C: If you have only one vehicle (could still use option B) we will find somebody to get you back to the
start, so don’t worry.
Pre-Start gear set up.
You will need to have a single bag/box per team with your kayaking AND rope gear that we will transport to
the appropriate place.
Order of events: Approx Distance (in miles):
short run 1.5
mountain bike 14
Orienteering 3
Short Bike 3
Kayak* 1.25
Coasteering* 0.3
Ropes*
Climb or jumar
Rappel
Short run 0.25
*We may at our discretion change the order of these…
You will need to keep your running shoes with you on the bike.
Equipment
Please see update I (below) for equipment.
Also, you may want a compass for orienteering
Be prepared to be self-sufficient for about 3 hours.
There will be water at the bike orienteering transition.
You can also place additional fluids and food in your kayak/ropes drop bag.
We will provide marked maps of the course with some additional directions on them.
The course itself (due to rain..) will not be marked.
Additional Rules:
You may only cross Encinal at the start of the bike – you may not ride along it.
You may not ride on Kanan Rd (if you end up there, you have missed a trail (and we’ll know).
You may ride on streets to the Bike/Kayak transition (you must bring your bikes to the kayaks).
The ropes will close at 2:00PM
If you have any questions please email or call Pete or John.
